This International Women’s Day, we have compiled a list of 5 women who have inspired us this past year. These women have encouraged and motivated us in more than one way and serve as an example that everything is possible if you are willing to work hard for it. Unfortunately, we can only name a few but the following women stood out to us due to their confidence, their bravery and their ability to overcome anything within their path that might stop them from doing their thing.
She won best supporting actress at this year’s Golden Globe Awards and what inspired us so much about her, was her acceptance speech. Regina King went on stage and like so many award winners before her, she used her platform to call on social issues. However, that wasn’t the end of it. Regina King made a vow on live television to be the change she wants to see in the world by promising that all the future project she will be part of within the next two years, will have at least 50 percent women on board with them. In the same breath as she made this big and difficult promise, she challenged her peers to do the same and therefore challenged people in power within her own industry as well as all industries, to take a stand out of solidarity, not just with words but with actions. To fight the fight of gender equality, she is willing to lose out on possibly big projects if they don’t include the change she is fighting to see.
She has travelled the world and went to the most troubled and most dangerous places around the globe to allow people to tell their stories and give a voice to those who have been drowned by the constant news stream we receive every single day. Over the years Stacey Dooley has given so many people, and especially women, a chance to speak up about the injustice they are facing, and she has not shied away from putting herself on the frontlines to deliver these powerful messages to us. It takes a strong voice to shout through the media stream we are facing and Stacey Dooley has succeeded repeatedly to make her own, and her fellow women’s voices heard by the public. By bringing these stories to public attention, she provides a platform for conversation and hopefully change.
Whether you agree with her political views or not, you must admit that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has achieved incredible things with her 29 years. The odds were stacked against her, but she defeated the ten-term incumbent congressman on her first try and became the youngest female congresswoman with 28 years. It is the ‘from dishwasher to megastar’ dream. Just months before the election, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez worked as a waitress until she decided to run for congress. She saw the problems in the Bronx where she grew up and decided to do something about it. She did not stoop down to the level of dirty campaigns and slandering the opponent. Despite her political views that people may or may not agree with, she fought with grace and dignity and didn’t give up until she won what she had worked so hard for and is still fighting for what she believes in every day to make her country a better place.
The global megastar faced incredible odds to get where she is today. The world seemed against her but she never gave up because she believed in herself. Lady Gaga’s story has spread all over social media and with her Born This Way Foundation, she aims to help youngsters who face the same issues she faced when she was young: bullying and mental health issues. Against all the negativity from her peers, Lady Gaga (born Stefani Germanotta) never gave up. She used every set back to fuel her journey to success. She knew what she wanted and despite people trying to put her down by, for instance, creating a Facebook group called “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous”, she became the first woman to win an Oscar, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, two Critics Choice Awards and a Satellite Award in the same year. She never gave up improving herself and working hard for what she wanted and that is truly inspiring.
