As we wave goodbye to summer and begin to embrace autumn, we’re still clinging onto our golden glow with the help of b.tan self-tanners. In an industry that can seem full of technical terms, we’re dedicated to finding high-quality, natural products that not only make you shine on the outside but nourish your insides as well. In a society where the sales of natural beauty products are continuously growing at a rapid rate, we’re shedding light on the beauty ingredients that you should be avoiding in your skincare routine.

Keratin

Keratin is commonly used in hair products to rebuild healthier hair however, when derived from animals it is naturally occurring in their nails, hooves and horns. If you’re looking for a better alternative, we’d recommend incorporating vegetable oils into your beauty routine.

Parabens

Parabens are often found in makeup, moisturisers, shaving gels and shampoo. Look for ingredients with the suffix “-paraben” as well as products which are labelled as paraben-free, such as our self-tanner range, b.tan.

Polyethylene/PEGs

Polyethylene can be found in scrubs, body wash, makeup and toothpaste. They’re the tiny plastic beads in face, lip scrubs and exfoliating washes which has been noted as a skin irritant. Additionally, polyethylene beads are not filtered by sewage systems, meaning they can be harmful to aquatic creatures when consumed.

Fragrance

With no technical name, fragrance may not sound as scary as other chemical ingredients however, companies often don’t have to disclose what ingredients are in products if they relate to fragrance. The ingredients can often contain chemicals that cause allergies, hormone disruption and lead to bigger health problems.  Our recommendation? Stick to products that are fragrance-free.
